Star Wars: The Last Jedi...

Recently, Mom and I decided to head out to our local theater and see Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Luke Skywalker's peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy.
The next installment of the Star Wars franchise picked up where the last feature left off - with Rey standing on a lonely island across from a grizzled-looking Luke Skywalker. The aftermath of the long-awaited meeting between Luke and Rey was a bit disappointing, but, somewhat understandable given Luke's issues with Kylo Ren and his reluctance to see things go horribly wrong with Rey.

Meanwhile, the resistance finds themselves in dire straits as imperial forces close in on the last remnants of their ranks and pound them mercilessly. There is a curious back and forth as the point of view shifts from quieter scenes with Rey on the lonely island and scenes of violence and destruction inflicted upon the resistance.

And elsewhere, the resistance plans a desperate operation to save themselves from utter ruin, which involves finding a person with particular talents and breaking into a heavily guarded fortress. Needless to say, in keeping with the oppressive aura of doom and gloom in this installment, the plan suffers some setbacks. And, just when you thought Captain Phasma was safely smashed in a trash compactor or destroyed when the planet on which the trash compactor stood, blew up, she makes her triumphant return to complicate Finn's day, yet again.

And still elsewhere, Rey and Kylo Ren finds themselves inexplicably drawn to one another and when they do finally meet, sparks fly, to say the least. And, later, when the resistance finds itself cornered, with nowhere to run, and with Kylo Ren overseeing their final annihilation, Luke makes an appearance, sort of, and uses the force in an unprecedented and somewhat controversial manner.

Overall, the tone of this latest installment, is somewhat somber as the resistance takes quite a beating and suffers horrendous losses during the course of the feature. Then, of course, depending on your point of view, the main question from the last installment, of who is Rey and where did Rey come from, may or may not have been answered in this installment. My brother, Tony and my nephew, Anthony, were particularly upset about the clouds surrounding Rey's origins. Even with the depressing tone of this installment, Mom and I still enjoyed Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
