Fruit of Grisaia...

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Fruit of Grisaia, but, it seemed like something I might enjoy...
Season 1
Fruit of Grisaia
Yuji Kazami thought that all he wanted was to attend school like a normal teenager, but Mihama Academy is nothing like the places of education he's dreamed of. And it's not just that Mihama seems eerily like a prison. There are also only five other students, and all five of these girls seem to have special reasons for having been placed in this institution. Sachi Komine, who always wears a maid outfit and seems to be compelled to carry out any order given her. The unsettling Makina Irisu, whose parents are tied to Japan's shady underworld. Michiru Matsushima, a combative girl afflicted with dual personalities. Car and motorcycle obsessed Amane Suou. And Yumiko Sakaki, whose welcome greeting to Yuji involves the deadly use of a box cutter. Of course, Yuji himself has his own dark secrets, as one of his new fellow students may be the next deadly target on his own hit list in FRUIT OF GRISAIA!

OVA and Season 2
Labyrinth of Grisaia and Eden of Grisaia
Yuji Kazami fulfilled a promise, but that promise was made long before he reached Mihama Academy. The seeds of the future are sown as young Yuji's family is ravaged and his psyche is shattered, only to be reshaped in the fires of violent training and war in The Labyrinth of Grisaia. However, Yuji's saga continues as his past catches up with him, and he is defended by the most unlikely guardian angels in The Eden of Grisaia.

Follow the grisly journey as the boy is forced to become a man, and delve into the aftermath of THE FRUIT OF GRISAIA in this special complete edition that contains both parts of the untold story: THE LABYRINTH OF GRISAIA and THE EDEN OF GRISAIA.
Fruit of Grisaia starts out with a fairly ominous tone as, our protagonist, Yuji, finds himself in hot water with the police, but, soon afterwards, phone calls are made and suddenly Yuji is in the clear. The tension builds quite nicely in the early episodes as Yuji’s intentions and the intentions of the other students are not known. There is a certain amount of comic relief and fan service which acts to lessen the sense of menace that pervades the first third of the series.

In the first half of Fruit of Grisaia, Yuji’s role in this school of crazies begins to take shape and by the middle of the series, Yuji’s role and the ultimate direction of the series becomes clear. At its core, Fruit of Grisaia is a harem-themed anime with Yuji being the focus of the harem, but, a distinguishing feature that sets Fruit of Grisaia apart from other harem anime, is that the intentions of the harem members with regard to Yuji is not known and sometimes, when they are revealed, the truth can be quite dramatic and in some cases explosive.

In the latter half of the series, the issues that Yuji encounters become increasingly more difficult as the series progresses. At the same time there seems to be increasing competition among the girls for Yuji's attention. Fruit of Grisaia is, at times, quite melodramatic as revelations about the various characters in the story come to light. But, the series never takes itself too seriously and just when events take a serious turn, there’s a bit of humor or fan service to lighten up the more dramatic moments. While there are no naughty bits to speak of, there is some fan service including some bare bottoms, bare breasts and quite a few panty shots. There is some red ink in Fruit of Grisaia, but, the series is not particularly gory. Overall, I would give Fruit of Grisaia a 4 out of 5. By the way, you will have to read your anime as Fruit of Grisaia is subtitled only.
