Highschool of the Dead...
I picked up Highschool of the Dead recently...
Blood and gore abound -- Highschool of the Dead is certainly not for those who fear red ink. HOTD is like every zombie movie I've ever seen, but, with subtitles and fan service. All of the usual zombie-tropes are explored -- people being ripped apart, head-smashing, child zombies munching on their parents, and so on. By the way, the zombies in HOTD are of the classic slow-moving variety. These zombies are attracted to sound, but, cannot see. They have difficulty navigating stairs or steep inclines and although, they are very strong, they show no evidence of cognitive ability, such as problem solving or being able to use tools.
There is quite a lot of fan service (tight costumes, short skirts, bare skin and suggestive situations and dialogue) in the series, so, HOTD is probably not suitable for the younger anime fans among us. The animation quality has that nice clean polished look that I've come to expect in more recent anime. Despite, the copious amounts of blood spilled in the series, there is not a whole lot of eye candy to speak of. I found the series very entertaining and overall, I was quite pleased. I give HOTD a 4 out of 5.
TV Series
It began without warning. It continues without mercy. Now a band of high schoolers join forces with guns, swords, baseball bats and anything else they can get their hands on to battle a bloodthirsty, flesh-hungry zombie apocalypse!
OVA: Drifters of the Dead
Drifters of the Dead is a side story to the Highschool of the Dead TV series.
When an unplanned stop on a deserted island gives Takashi, Saeko and the rest of the ragged band of survivors a chance to expose themselves to something other than zombie bites for a change, they're more than ready to take a break and let their hair down. Discovering the remnants of an old beach store, the entire group strips to swimsuits and sets out to make the uninhabited island inhabitable, but they're unaware that this seeming paradise is actually just the dead calm before the storm.
Sometimes the recently deceased aren't the only problems that can lie buried in the sand, and as the swimwear comes off and the inhibitions come down, a kink in the island's food chain sets a truly shocking series of events into motion! You won't believe what comes out next, but suffice it to say that the deserted island may not be so deserted after all!
