Sankarea Edits: TV14 Vs. TVMA...
A few years ago, I picked up the broadcast (TV 14) version of Sankarea, then sometime later, I picked up the uncut (TV MA) version of Sankarea. Recently, I was inspired to perform a side-by-side comparison of the two versions. Why? It seemed like a good idea at the time...
Episode 1
The first episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:09) was the same for both versions.
Episode 2
The second episode, like the first, is virtually identical in both versions, but, there were three notable differences. First, the TV MA version has an extra bit of fan service from Rea which does not appear in the TV 14 version. The TV MA shows a brief view of Rea's underwear as she trips over a bowling ball. At the same point in the TV 14 version, there is a close-up of Furuya's face...
04:16
After Furuya returns home from his apparently unsuccessful attempt to revive his dead cat, he finds his cousin in the bath. Furuya's cousin is having a very steamy bath that obscures her entire body in the TV 14 version while in the TV MA version her bath is more revealing...
19:47
In the TV MA version of the second episode, the last scene in the episode showing Rea's hand with the empty bottle is slightly longer. The running time was one second longer in the TV MA version (22:10 versus 22:09).
Episode 3
The third episode has most of the same content in both versions, but, in the TV MA version, most of the scenes leading up to Rea's climactic fall off a cliff have been shortened slightly, so, that by the time of Rea's fall, the two versions are about two seconds out of alignment. To illustrate the misalignment, when Rea starts to fall off the cliff in the TV 14 version, she has already impacted the ground in the TV MA version...
18:21
There are three notable edits in the third episode. The first is when Rea attempts to stand for the first time after her fall, part of her body is blurred to obscure the gore in the TV 14 version...
20:53 (TV 14) / 20:51 (TV MA)
A few seconds later, when Rea is standing, there is a panning shot showing, in gruesome detail, some of Rea's entrails. The TV 14 version blacks out the entrails...
20:57 (TV 14) / 20:55 (TV MA)
Likewise, there is another shot showing Furuya, with the point of view positioned below and behind Rea. There is gore visible in the TV MA version while the TV 14 version is blacked out...
21:19 (TV 14) / 21:18 (TV MA)
Aside from the masking, both versions have all of the same scenes, but, the pacing of each scene is a little bit faster in the TV MA version, resulting in the episode being a little shorter in the TV MA version compared to the TV 14 version. The extra time gained at the end of the TV MA version is used to display the end title card a little longer. So, the overall running time is the same for both versions (22:09).
Episode 4
The fourth episode is virtually identical in both versions, but, there were three notable differences. First, in the TV MA version where we see a flashback to when Rea is walking away from her father, we see Rea's entrails hanging out, while in the TV 14 version, they are blacked out...
00:55
The second difference was somewhat subtle and I might not have spotted it without a side-by-side comparison. When Rea is looking out of Furuya's bedroom window, in the TV MA version her clothes and the curtain are moving in the breeze, but, in the TV 14 version, for a few seconds, her clothes and the curtain do not move...
08:07
Then later, in the ubiquitous shower scene, Rea's shower is very steamy in the TV 14 version and a bit more revealing in the TV MA version...
16:06
The running time for the fourth episode is the same for both versions (22:09).
Episode 5
The fifth episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:09) was the same for both versions.
Episode 6
The sixth episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:09) was the same for both versions.
Episode 7
The seventh episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:10) was the same for both versions.
Episode 8
The eighth episode is virtually identical in both versions, but, there were two notable differences. First, in the TV 14 version when Furuya's cousin is in the bathhouse, the bath is very steamy, while in the TV MA version, the bath is more revealing...
08:00
Second, is a scene with Furuya's cousin and younger sister in the bathhouse where the two are undressing, the TV 14 version obscures the two with baskets and a bank of lockers, while the TV MA version is more revealing...
10:01
The running time for the eighth episode is the same for both versions (22:10).
Episode 9
The ninth episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:10) was the same for both versions.
Episode 10
The tenth episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:10) was the same for both versions.
Episode 11
The eleventh episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:10) was the same for both versions.
Episode 12
The twelfth episode was almost identical in both versions. The running time in the TV MA version (22:11) was about ¾ of a second longer than the TV 14 version (22:10). The two versions began to diverge from one another by a fraction of a second at roughly 21:30. The timing of events in the last 40 seconds in the TV MA version is slightly faster than the TV 14 version, but, all of the same scenes are present in both versions. The extra time gained in the TV MA version is used to hold on a still image of the end title card a fraction of a second longer.
Episode 13
The thirteenth episode seems to be identical in both versions. The running time (22:10) was the same for both versions.
In my humble opinion, while some edits were easy to anticipate, other edits, particularly the timing changes for episode 3, were a bit of a surprise...
Zombie-obsessed Furuya is making a potion to reanimate his dead cat when he meets Rea. She's about as miserable as a girl can get, thanks to her creepy, domineering father. When the pain becomes too much, she tries to commit suicide with a sip of Furuya's weird elixir. The potion doesn't kill her but it does turn her into a zombie after she falls from a cliff.I was wondering what was different in the series to cause the change in rating from TV14 to TVMA, so, after I got my hands on the uncut version, I prepared for a side-by-side comparison. There were some technical challenges, but, in the end, I was able to get both versions to play simultaneously in one application window. So, I could start and stop both versions with one set of controls. The images below are screen captures from the application window in which both versions where playing.
Now that Rea's undead and ready to finally live, she hides out with Furuya, who's always dreamed of having a zombie girlfriend. Their one-of-a-kind relationship comes with some challenges, like the fact that Rea is decomposing. Even worse, her freak-show dad is dangerously determined to get her back under his control. As Furuya fights to keep his ghoulfriend safe, Rea finds the secret to resurrecting her happiness: Live like you re dying even if you re already dead.
Please Note: the running times were determined by the difference between the start of the first chapter in an episode and the end of the chapter where the end title card appears. So, for episode 1, it would be the difference between the start of chapter 1 and the end of chapter 4 -- 22:09. Also, the TV MA version does show some bare breasts, so, where possible, I tried to illustrate the differences without showing too much cleavage.
