Skull Man...

I wasn't sure what to make of Skull Man when it appeared on store shelves a few years ago, but, I picked it up anyway...
Otomo City: where freedom and justice have atrophied to the bone; where conspiracy rules the day and death stalks the night... Death in the form of the Skull Man, a literal Grim Reaper whose skeletal grin presages grisly mayhem and murder, even to the monstrous mutants that haunt the city's underworlds!

To investigate a bizarre slaying, journalist Minagami Hayato and photographer Kiriko Mamiya must stalk this ultimate predator, through a festering cadaver of a city where the corruption flows in rivers as deep and foul as the sins of the reigning elite, and unearth a secret so shocking that an entire city has been turned into a tomb to contain! In a nightmarish necropolis where nothing is as it seems, vengeance comes in the form of a living Death's-Head!
Recently, I took the opportunity to see Skull Man. The series centers around a mysterious vigilante wearing a skull-shaped mask who kills demons hiding in human form. The story is told mainly from the point of view of a reporter and a photographer who are investigating the murders committed by the Skull Man. The series has quite a lot of red ink, but, is surprisingly not very gory. There is some action in the series, but, most of the series is spent following the investigation, so, Skull Man leans more heavily toward drama than action.

Interwoven in among the investigation and Skull Man incidents are tales of love and loss as the two reporters, who have ties to the city of Otomo, relive past events and come to grips with regrets and thoughts of what might have been. Early on, in Skull Man, some characters get a lot of screen time only to be revealed as demons and die a tragic death at the hands of Skull Man.

Throughout Skull Man, as the reporters investigate, there are shadowy conspiracies that weave a dark thread of malevolence which casts a very dark shadow in the series. Skull Man is dark and brooding and plods along at a fairly slow pace. There are occasional moments of violence that spice up, what would otherwise be quite a boring series. To complicate matters, during the course of the series, there appears to be more than one Skull Man, so, the viewer really doesn't know who the Skull Man really is, until the latter episodes of the series.

Skull Man is a dramatic series filled with intertwined conspiracies, some red ink and a modest amount of violence. The series is bit more slowly paced than I would like. In addition, it takes a while for a lot of the loose ends to be resolved. Quite a few people with significant screen time, end up dead or otherwise unhappy. There are no naughty bits to speak of. Overall, Skull Man was intriguing, but, this dramatic tale is certainly not for everyone. I gave Skull Man a 2 out of 5. Also, you will need to read your anime as Skull Man is subtitled only.
