Contempo And The Missing Hamburger...

Image
When Blogger rolled out new templates in 2017, the navigation scheme for the new templates was a bit different. Those of us who happened to have the screen width set below a given width, discovered that the sidebar menu was not visible on the home page unless you selected a "hamburger" icon on the top-left corner of the page. And, if you navigated to a post, the hamburger icon disappeared entirely, so, those of us with screen widths below a given width could not access the sidebar menu at all from post pages. Since my display is set to a width of 1280, I found that I had to set the Zoom level to 80% to force the sidebar to appear on post pages, otherwise it was inaccessible. I don't like editing the HTML as it can become a maintenance issue down the road if the default template is changed. A fix that involved editing the HTML has been around for a while, but, what I really wanted was a gadget that could be added to a page's layout that would restore the hamburger t

Tinker Bell Banned...

Image
After many years away, my brother, Sammy, recently came home from away and offered some fascinating insights into the peculiarities of censorship in the modern era. Sammy wanted to see an R-Rated movie. As he was looking for a suitable candidate --  Deadpool  --, he happened to notice a pile of  Tinker Bell  movies and mentioned that he had never seen any of them as they were unrated and as such, were banned. He also noted that  Big , the Tom Hanks movie where Tom plays a child who has suddenly grown big, was censored for objectionable content. As for Tinker Bell, from what I understand, in the original text of Peter Pan , fairies are described as being only able to hold only one emotion at a time, so, when Tinker Bell is angry, she is psycho-crazy angry. And, some of Tinker Bell's anger management issues even make their way into the animated Peter Pan movie as noted in a Buzzfeed article. Of course, the more recent Tinker Bell movies are toned down quite a bit for younger fan

Napping Princess...

Image
Recently, I took the opportunity to watch Napping Princess ... In Napping Princess the year is 2020, three days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics. While she should be studying for her exams, Kokone Morikawa is often dozing off, stuck between reality and a dream-world full of fantastic motorized contraptions. But after her father, a talented, but, mysterious mechanic, is arrested for stealing technology from a powerful corporation, it's up to Kokone and her childhood friend Morio to save him. Together they realize that Kokone’s dream-world holds the answers to the mystery behind the stolen tech, and they embark on a journey that traverses dreams and reality, city and country, and past and present. Their mission uncovers a trail of clues to her father’s disappearance and ultimately a surprising revelation about Kokone's family. In Napping Princess , Kokone is a typical student being raised by her father. They seem to have a good relationship, but, at times her father ca

Dimension W...

Image
I happened to catch a handful of episodes on Cartoon Network and  Dimension W seemed like something I should look into owning... In the near future, devices known as coils, harness the power of another dimension. Seeking illegal coils, bounty hunter Kyoma Mabuchi spends his days resisting the use of dimensional energy. That is, until a very realistic and adorable robot, Mira, gets mixed up in things. Partnering with the reluctant Kyoma on his missions, together they uncover the truth behind the mysterious power. Recently, I took the opportunity to watch Dimension W . The series starts out with our two heroes, Kyoma and Mira, in a somewhat adversarial relationship, but, events quickly conspire against our heroes to force then into a working relationship. I have a soft spot for grumpy, gruff male characters and, of course, Mira, with mechanical headgear and what appears to be an extension cord protruding from her rear end, could almost pass for a cat-girl. And, we all know that I al

Surviving the Move from Post To Snippet...

Image
Last year, Blogger launched new templates. I selected the  Cntempo Template  and a feature of this template is to offer snippets of a number of posts on the home page with links to the full posts that underlie each each snippet. In many of my posts, I offer ratings for anime, movies or TV shows and I wanted a way to display the ratings in the snippets, so, visitors would not have to open a particular post to see a rating. The problem that I encountered is that the snippets did not contain the full text of the entire post, but, instead, contain just a small fragment of the text from their posts, and since, the rating text and images in each post are usually at the bottom of each post, the snippets never contained any information about the ratings that might appear in the full post. Some HTML content like images are automatically stripped out of the snippet. So, getting information from the original post, and having that information survive in the snippet, proved an interesting challe

Un-Go...

Image
I have a soft spot for detective dramas, so, Un-Go seemed like something I might enjoy... Some call him the "Last Great Detective." Others call him the "Defeated Detective." What's certain is that he's Shinjurou Yuuki, a young man with a passion for mysteries and a talent for solving them that has made him the target of dark forces now stirring within the sinister underworld of a near future Tokyo. That could prove lethal, given that not even the other "good guys," including the police, are exactly on Shinjouro's side. Fortunately Yuuki's not completely on his own, and with the aid of his uniquely talented associate Inga, he's ready to cut a swath through the veils of secrecy that have been laid before him. Un-Go is a series of detective stories adapted from early 1900’s stories which were updated to the modern era and given a supernatural twist with the introduction of Inga, a being with the power to draw souls from people. Witchblade...

Image
Witchblade has held a special place in my heart for a number of years, so, when I heard about a Witchblade anime, I had to have it... Anime Volume 1 The Witchblade is an ancient weapon bestowed only upon the women it forever scars. It's part armor, part sentient, and thirsts for battle. Masane Amaha discovers her fate and battles to keep possession of the Witchblade as two opposing forces risk all humanity for control of the ultimate weapon. Volume 2 Twisted reflections of Masane's alter ego, the Cloneblades stand at the very pinnacle of bioengineering and shattered corporate alliances. A breed of frightful warriors, confrontation is inevitable when so many share the same desire: the Witchblade. As the past creeps into the present to haunt them all, relationships between unsteady foes lie revealed; old scars explained but never forgotten. Volume 3 Shocking revelations threaten to undo Masane and every soul that surrounds her in this desperate age of fear and lust. T

Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends...

Image
Over the weekend, I decided to watch both seasons of  Haganai in one sitting... Season 1 Yozora's an abrasive loudmouth whose only friend at school is imaginary. She knows she's difficult - which makes her better off than Kodaka, a new transfer student who picked up an undeserved bad reputation the second he stepped on campus. Inspired by their shared status as social catastrophes, the two loners unite and start the Neighbors Club, an organization dedicated to finding other misfits and making friends. In no time, a third member joins their ranks: Sena, a pretty, popular rich girl who annoys Yozora to no end. With Kodaka in the middle of the chaos, the brash brunette and the blonde boy-magnet go 'round and 'round, even as the Neighbors Club begins to grow. Hopefully, the girls can get past their rivalry, because sometimes the friendship you're looking for is right in front of you, and sometimes the best friends are the friends you never even wanted. Linking Snippet Text to Posts In Contempo...

Image
Last year, Blogger released new templates. In the Contempo template, visitors wishing to access the  underlying post can select the snippet title or a "read more" link under the snippet text, but, the snippet image and text are not linked to the underlying post. I wanted a means of making the snippet image and text link to the underlying post, so, after some trial and error, I made the following gadget: <script type="text/javascript"> var d=document; var divs; var articles; articles=d.getElementsByTagName('article'); for (var j=0;j<articles.length;j++){ var articleh3 = articles[j].getElementsByTagName('h3'); var articleh3a = articleh3[0].getElementsByTagName('a'); var atitle = new String(articleh3a[0].innerHTML).replace('...',''); divs=articles[j].getElementsByTagName('div'); for (var k=0;k<divs.length;k++){ if (divs[k].className=='snippet-thumbnail') { var img = new String(divs[k].innerHTML);
