Bludgeoning Angel...

With a name like "Bludgeoning Angel", I couldn't resist bringing this title home with me today...
Imagine a world where the secret to immortality has been discovered, causing women to stop aging by the time they turn twelve. Sounds like it might be a perfect playground for a discoverer with less-than-wholesome interests, doesn't it? That's exactly why the Big Man Upstairs sends Dokuro-chan, one of his angelic assassins, into the past to "deal" with the sicko who messed with nature!

But Dokuro-chan decides instead to move in with her target, Sakura Kusakabe, and keep him too occupied to find eternal life. Funnily enough, the path of nonviolence leads to a fountain of blood, as Dokuro-chan accidentally kills Sakura on an almost-daily basis only to resurrect him with a magical chant moments later.
From the summary, Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan seems like it might be something along the lines of Excel Saga -- certainly when I read that one of the main characters keeps dying, Excel Saga is the first title to spring to mind.

Update

The novelty of seeing Sakura's head being torn off with a fountain of blood and gore again and again, gets tired fairly quickly. Despite Dokuro-Chan's seeming propensity for killing Sakura, Dokuro-Chan seems to have obsessive affection for Sakura. The situation is, of course, complicated by the arrival of another Angel assassin and Sakura's interest in Shizuki, another girl from his school.

There is a lot of violence in the series and at times, the violence can be very graphic, but, the world Dokuro-Chan lives in is not a malicious place. People, once killed, don't stay dead and the violence in the series is generally confined to Sakura.

There's also a lot of fan service and suggestive dialogue in the series, but, there are no naughty bits to speak of. The animation quality is, at times, noticeably poor. But, given the subject matter, expectations are not very high anyway.

Although, I bought this title, primarily because of its name, I was hoping that this title would be somewhat more entertaining than it turned out to be. After the novelty of seeing Sakura killed over and over again wears off, there's not really anything left to hold my interest. There is some humor in the series, but, much of the humor is derived from violence and once the impact of the violence wears off, what is left, is an awkward love-triangle.

Contrasted to a series like Ah! My Goddess, where an otherworldly being meets a guy from Earth, Ah! My Goddess is sweet, innocent and it was really interesting to see how events unfolded. Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan is anything but sweet and innocent and it was not at all pleasant to watch. In Excel Saga, the humor is fast-paced and takes a variety of different forms. Whereas, Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan has a much slower pace and the humor is somewhat repetitive.

I like the name of the series, the fact that the series is self-contained and there were some parts of the story that I did like (the effect of removing an Angel's halo being one). Although, the series is not completely without merit, overall, I was not very pleased with the series. I gave Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan a 1 out of 5.
