Rosario+Vampire...

Last week, I picked up Rosario + Vampire...
Tsukune looks to be a typical high school student, but his grades are bad to the bone. Rejected by school after school, he finally gets accepted by an academy that's more than a little out of his neighborhood. Unfortunately, it's a school for monsters and Tsukune is the lone human! While forced to hide his secret, along comes a cute - but hungry - vampire girl named Moka. Beneath her cute and clumsy exterior, she too is not exactly as she seems...
I've always had a soft spot for vampires and rarely have I met a vampire, I didn't like. After watching the first volume of Rosario+Vampire, I am very pleased to have met Moka. The series has a fair amount of fan service and does suffer from a distinct "monster-of-the-week" syndrome, but, the series doesn't take itself too seriously and even goes to the length of reporting the amount of time it takes Moka to defeat each challenger. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, Rosario+Vampire uses tried and true monster conventions as the basis for humor and a bit of action.

The story in Rosario+Vampire shares some similarity to Bastard and Master of Mosquiton in that Moka's powers seem to require some assistance from a human partner. But, unlike the aforementioned action adventure series, Rosario+Vampire leans more towards a slice-of-life romantic comedy, but, with monsters and the occasional monster smack down in the school yard. The animation has that nice crisp look and feel that I've come to expect in more recent productions. There is a very nice transformation sequence that is repeated throughout the series. But, aside from the transformation sequence, there isn't a great deal of eye candy associated with the series.

Although, the world depicted in Rosario+Vampire does have things that go bump in the night, no one is truly evil -- they're just doing what comes naturally to monsters. There is some violence, but, no blood or gore to speak of. The series does exhibit quite a bit of fan service and while there are no naughty bits to speak of, the tone of the series may be a bit too risque for the youngest anime fans. Overall, I was very pleased to visit Moka and her friends for a while and give the series a 4 out of 5.
