Spirited Away...
Years ago, I saw untranslated previews for Spirited Away and I anxiously awaited its U.S. release,..
From Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky) comes the Winner of the 2002 Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival!
While on holiday with her parents, a young girl named Chihiro accidentally stumbles into an enchanted village where ancient Japanese demons go for rest and relaxation. After her parents are unfortunately transformed into enormous pigs, Chihiro is forced to take a job as a cleaning girl in a devil-filled onsen (Japanese bath house), where she contends with eight-legged spider-men, gorgeous sky-dragons and a silent, love-struck wraith.
Spirited Away is a bit darker and a bit bloodier than Miyazaki's earlier works, but, it's still a good story. The pace is a bit slow in the middle, but, overall Spirited Away is not bad at all. My favorite part occurs fairly early in the movie when Chihiro is working in the bath house and encounters a customer with a lethal case of body odor. True to form, the voice talents that Disney has brought to bear with this and other Miyazaki productions are better than average. I enjoy watching this just as much in English as I do in the original Japanese. I gave Spirited Away a 3 out of 5. The Spirited Away soundtrack CD has 21 tracks and I liked 4 tracks for a total of 19% which works out to a rating of 1 out of 4.
