Magic User's Club...

Sometime ago, I picked up Magic Users Club...
Volume 1
I'll Follow You
It was in another world, during a magical time full of mystery, wonder, and ancient power. It was a place known as high school. When humanity was threatened by an alien force so powerful that all of Earth was left helpless, it became clear to anyone with any common sense at all that no one could ever stand against them. Luckily, our brave Magic User's Club doesn't have much of that. Earnestly clueless Sae Sawanoguchi must challenge the most powerful force in the universe, keep up with her homework, and thwart the bouncing bust of the evil queen of girl's comic books, Miyama. In addition, the life of a normal high school student could never be complete without an army of shiny, invulnerable alien robots with inscrutable goals and unlimited firepower. Luckily for earth, the Magic User's Club is on the job. They are armed with Sae's enthusiasm, Nanaka's knack of botching magic at the worst possible time, club president Takakura's uncanny ability to interpret every situation as sexual, and club vice-president Aburatsitbo's love of prancing around his fellow male students in a pair of tight tennis shorts. With all of this, it would be no wonder if the aliens just turned and fled immediately.

Volume 2
Magic Is So Easy
It was in another world, during a magical time full of mystery, wonder, and ancient power. It was a place known as high school. An army of shiny, invulnerable alien invaders is threatening to dominate the human race. Not only that, but the members of the Magic User's Club, Takakura, Sae, Aburatsubo, Akane, and Nanaka are the only ones on Earth who can oppose them. This situation calls for drastic action, and the entire Magic Club is prepared. They're ready to get as far away from the aliens as possible and relax on the beach. Then Miyama shows up, however, Takakura wonders if fighting aliens would be more relaxing. Takakura and Sae are roped into performing tricks for Miyama's beach party, and they end up starting history's first magically powered game of Truth or Dare!

Volume 3
Believe In Yourself
It was in another world, during a magical time full of mystery, wonder, and ancient power. It was a place known as high school. The alien menace draws near, searching for the source of magic on Earth. The reporter Minawa suspects this, and enlists Akane's help. She attempts A very dangerous spell at his request, contacting. the alien mind itself! Will she finally uncover the invader's true motives, or will the power of the alien mind destroy her? Meanwhile, the real serious drama unfolds back at the high school. Nanaka, longtime admirer of the popular Aburatsubo, has finally decided to confess her love! Will Sae become inspired and confess to Takeo? Before Sae can decide, she is taken captive by the Bell. The rest of the Magic Club gathers and prepares for one final assault to save Sae and the human race!

Volume 4
I Wanna Do More
The aliens have been defeated and the Bell has been transformed into a gigantic cherry tree. Now, the brave Magic User's Club must reconvene to deal with a new problem. Apparently, some inconsiderate persons left a skyscraper sized cherry tree in the middle of Tokyo and it's become a major inconvenience to everyone in the city. Even though they have no idea who could have done such a thing, the Club feels strangely responsible and springs into action.

Volume 5
My Secret Wish
Takeo has always had an eye and a heart for the ladies, but never the luck to go with them! Now, however, it seems that he is skipping club meetings to go see Akane! If that's not enough, Takeo shows up later at Sae's window. Drifting up on a broom, he is cloaked in a dashing cape and the glow of moonlight. Has the Magic Club president finally become a real lady's man ?

Volume 6
A Magic Kiss
It's time for the school festival, where each club gets a chance to show their stuff to the entire school. The Magic User's Club is no exception, but they do have one complication. They're not allowed to let anyone see their magic! Sae decides that Tarot reading is a good idea, because everyone will expect it to be just a trick. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned and the Magic Club ends up strutting their stuff in auditions for the drama club instead. Then, Sae spots the mysterious sprite-like person who's been appearing when her magic backfires. This person has come to see her, and teach her about a new kind of magic. It's the magic of a first kiss!

Volume 7
Should I Do?
Jinno has become a member of the Magic User's Club, and he wastes no time making himself at home. He quickly gains the confidence of each member, confronting Nanaka, Aburatsubo and Takeo about their unrequited loves. Akane may not have such feelings, but when Jinno works his magic on her own confused and selfish desires, things really get out of hand. The entire club must overcome their confusion and join forces, before Akane's wild magic threatens the entire city of Tokyo!
One fine day, aliens take over the Earth. Fighters, carriers, missiles and the finest soldiers Earth has to offer are useless against the Bell. The story begins a year later, life has returned to some semblance of normal. It is at this point that the five members of the Magic User's Club step up to the plate to challenge the Bell.

There's no bloodshed or gore. There is some fan service, but, no naughty bits. The first three volumes of the series represent the story of the Magic User's Club and their struggle with the Bell. That part of the  series has a lot of humor and was a very enjoyable experience from beginning to end. The story continues with the fourth volume following the conflict with the Bell and, in my humble opinion, the story seems to take a turn for the worse. I lost interest in the series after the fourth volume.

I have four of the seven original DVD releases. My favorite parts are the opening sequence where we see humanity's armies defeated and Miyama's close encounter with an alien. I liked the initial volumes so much, that when a friend of mine needed a little magic in his life, I got him the first three volumes of the series. Even though I never bothered to finish watching the second half of the series, I still gave Magic User's Club a 4 out of 5.
