Rahxephon...

A while ago, I picked up Rahxephon...
TV Series
Volume 1
Threshold
From writer/director, Yutaka Izubuchi (Gasaraki, Patlabor, and Assemble Insert), and the production company, BONES (Escaflowne the Movie, Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's door) comes RahXephon.

2015 AD. Tokyo is apparently the last city remaining on the otherwise devastated Earth. But high school student Ayato Kamina is caught up in a devastating attack on the city, from fighters that must have come from outside.

Emerging from the rubble, he meets a mysterious girl, Reika Mishima, who guides him to a hidden sanctuary where, from a black egg, an enormous humanoid weapon - RahXephon - emerges. Inside the egg is a marking that matches one on Ayato's body. He is the only person who can pilot RahXephon, and as assaults on the city continue he finds himself fighting to defend his world, even as evidence mounts that everything - and everyone - he thought was true isn't anymore.

Volume 2
Tonal Pattern
As the Mu launch a succession of attacks against the free world, TERRA is forced to use their secret weapon, the RahXephon, despite the reluctance of its pilot.

Lost in time and trapped in a world he thought had been destroyed, Ayato must confront both a new wave of Dolem and his suspicions that he is only a pawn in a much larger game. The mysterious advances of the girl known as Quon and the reappearance of a supposedly dead friend are only a few of the many mysteries that must be unraveled.

Volume 3
Harmonic Convergence
Just when Ayato thought he had finally learned the truth, the walls between the world of the Mu and our own "real" world begin to crumble once more. With the enigmatic Quon and Reika as guides, he must discover the truth of his own nature or be forever trapped inside a prison of his own dreams. Reality and fantasies intertwine in nightmarish rhythm, but the ultimate horror is yet to come as the fabric of time and space itself begins to unravel in the third volume of RahXephon!

Volume 4
Dissonance
Tremors ripple through the city as new Dolems attack, but the most dangerous shock waves of all are the mental assaults that now threaten to overwhelm Ayato's grasp of the physical world itself. As new players enter the deadly game between the humans and the Mu, the young pilot finds himself alone and without backup, struggling to rebuild the foundation of his own reality as the universe threatens to collapse beneath him.

Volume 5
Synaesthesia
As the Mu's grip on the city of Tokyo tightens, Ayato now finds himself pursued between two worlds, with close friends on both sides seeking to destroy him. Even after all he has experienced thus far, the newest shocks he receives are the most terrifying of all. The secret power source of the Dolems is about to be unveiled, and that secret will haunt him to the grave. In order to live, he must be prepared to sacrifice anything... even the life of a friend. The blood of the innocents will flow.

Volume 6
Aria
As TERRA's obsessive new commander begins a massive build-up for a final assault on Tokyo Jupiter, Ayato's former friend Mamoru attacks Nirai-Kanai in his own Dolem, seeking revenge for Hiroko's death. Meanwhile, a mysterious new cadet has suddenly appeared within TERRA's ranks, a cadet with a hauntingly familiar face. Confronted with his destiny, Ayato must make a terrifying choice: to reclaim the RahXephon or sacrifice everything he holds dear. But even with the RahXephon, can he stop the horror that is about to happen?

Volume 7
Crescendo
At long last, the war with the Mu reaches its climax. The truths that have been hidden are finally revealed. As Ayato stands on the brink of making the ultimate choice, the future of not just one man and one woman, but of two sentient races, hangs in the balance. The symphony of light and terror, of treachery and love, at last completes itself in the final astounding volume of RahXephon.

Movie
Return to the world of RahXephon, where humans and Mu fight for dominance over a shattered Earth, and giant statues are the ultimate weapons. Where music forms the fabric of the universe and the link between two hearts is the thread upon which the fate of humanity hangs. It is still a love story, but it is not the same story. Not exactly. Prepare for new visions and new revelations, as the other side of RahXephon is finally revealed.
There is a lot of good wholesome violence and destruction and some twists and turns in the story. It started out very well, but, I lost interest in the series after a couple of volumes. I gave Rahxephon a 2 out of 5.
