Dangaio...

Way back, when VCRs still stalked the Earth, I picked up the VHS version of Dangaio...
Brought together by the mysterious Doctor Tarsan, these four psychic warriors are able to unite to form DANGAIO, the most powerful weapon in the universe. Using their full psionic power, they alone can stop the bloody tyranny of Captain Garimoth.

Is their psychogenic wave strong enough to destroy his evil henchman, the notorious cyborg Gil Burg? Or will the warriors fall to Garimoth's trickery which finds weakness in their forgotten pasts?

An interstellar sci-fi adventure of mecha androids and transformers.

Volume 1
Professor Tarsan, a capitalistic space scientist, claims that he created the four youths and he plans to sell them as the ultimate mecha warriors to the evil "Bunker Pirates". Equipped with their psionc abilities and their sophisticated Danfighters, the four escape and set out on a voyage that will lead them to a deadly encounter with the pirates which forces them to form the ultimate mechanical robot - Dangaio!

Volume 2
The Dangaio team is training for the next Bunker attack. Their training is put to the test when three assassins arrive on their snowbound home world. During the battle, Lamba must confront horrifying revelations about their terrifying past. Once again the four psychics and Professor Tarsan unleash the power of Dangaio in a battle for survival.

Volume 3
In the final episode, Roll Kran returns to his homeworld Latecia and finds his people in rebellion against the Bunker Pirates. Much to his surprise, his return home is met with hostility by his old friends in the resistance who blame him for Latecia's military occupation. Roll must defend his world and the Dangaio team from the insane onslaught of the Bunker forces led by the resurrected Gill Berg.
The MANGA version uses a different spelling for the title - Dangaioh - and condenses all three volumes on one tape. The first episode is told in flashback with what was the original introduction to episode 2. Dangaio is a genre series involving giant robots assembled from various smaller elements. I've heard rumors that the series has some redeeming qualities, but, I lost interest in the series fairly early on. There are some known production issues with the series which make for a somewhat disappointing experience. I used to have the original US Renditions version on subtitled VHS. I gave Dangaio a 1 out of 5. Considering my dislike for Manga, the current publisher, and my disappointment with the series, in the aftermath of the Ultimate Otaku Fall Cleanup, I decided not to keep it in my archive.
