Video Girl Ai...

Long ago, when VCRs still stalked the Earth, I picked up Video Girl Ai...
Volume 1
I'm Here For You
Yota Moteuchi is a reasonably happy teenage boy living a reasonably comfortable life in Tokyo. In some ways, he's got the ideal situation. But Yota is lonely. Because he's so shy, Yota (his nickname is "dateless") can't be around normal girls, never mind the love of his life, Moemi. Thrown together during the long course of a date-like day, things had just been looking promising when a tearful Moemi told a stricken Yota her own secret: "There's someone at school that I like, but he doesn't like me back." Out wandering the streets alone, Yota looks up to see a video store he'd never noticed before: Gokuraku ("paradise"). More than a little nervous that someone will catch him in the "adult" section, he chooses one that looks promising, "Video Girl Ai." This is a tale of love lost... and then maybe found again, with the help of a little magic.

Volume 2
First Date
Ai means love and Moteuchi means loser, but that doesn't mean that they aren't made for each other. But Yota has other people to consider, and Ai's tape is starting to run out.. An afternoon on the town brings Ai and Yota closer together, but a long-held dream like Moemi isn't something he can forget overnight, even if he does have a Video Girl to comfort him. The guy at school told Moemi he didn't like her back but she still wants to give him a handmade scarf for his birthday. Can Yota, who never thought he'd love anyone but Moemi, face his own challenging feelings?

Volume 3
Ai, Love and Sadness
When Yota's VCR breaks down, Ai vanishes, leaving no trace of her in the real world except in the relationships of Moemi, Yota, and Takashi. But, all is not well, for the 'defective' video girl has been reclaimed by her creator, the heartless and mysterious Rolex. To save her, Yota must enter the Video World, where illusions and dangers will force him to make extreme sacrifices for the girl he truly loves.
Video Girl Ai OST CD
Video Girl Ai is a dramatic romantic-comedy. It's touching and at times very funny. It's another one of those rare gems. Video Girl Ai has some fan service and even a couple of bare breasts. I used to have the first volume on subtitled VHS and later I repurchased the entire series on DVD. I gave Video Girl Ai a 4 out of 5. The Video Girl Ai soundtrack CD has 10 tracks and I liked 4 tracks for a total of 40% which works out to a rating of 2 out of 4.
