Space Pirate Mito...
I was trawling the bargain bin at my favorite online anime e-tailer and look what came home with me -- Space Pirate Mito...
My particular set was apparently, at one time, an exclusive to Best Buy and came with both the first and second seasons in one set. The first season was packaged in a horrendously over-sized box, but, thankfully, each DVD was on its own leaf and, even more thankfully, none of the spindles were broken.
I've started to watch the series. The opening sequence is bubbly and full of vibrant colors and gives the overall impression of being silly and somewhat childish. The series itself is very fast paced. I found myself having to replay certain segments to keep up with the dialogue. Of course, I prefer to READ my anime. Bright colors and frenetic action abound. Mito seems to me, to be the sort who runs headlong into trouble.
My initial impression of Space Pirate Mito, as a whole, is actually quite good. Even though the pace of the series is fairly fast, I found the series to be very engrossing and a real treat to watch. Having finished watching both seasons of the series, my initial impression still holds true. There are no naughty bits and no blood or gore to be found.
The story in Space Pirate Mito is fairly convoluted and, at times, quite silly. You'll need to suspend disbelief quite a bit, particularly in the second season, but, the pay-off is quite nice, if a bit on the goofy side. An interesting quirk in the character design for the series is that the sparkle that appears in the eyes of various characters is a star for aliens and round for humans. Or in the case of Aoi, who is half alien and half human, one eye has a star sparkle and the other eye has a round sparkle.
Overall, I was very pleased with Space Pirate Mito and gave the series a 4 out of 5.
Season 1Admittedly, there's probably a reason why Space Pirate Mito ended up in the bargain bin, but, Mito spoke to me and said "buy me", so I did. The animation appears somewhat more dated than one would expect at first glance, but, the story made Space Pirate Mito seem like something I might like.
Volume 1
Call Me Mom!
Honor thy firepower and mother.
Mito isn't just another space pirate, she's a three foot tall childlike alien with enough guts to outshine a supernova. She's known as the galaxy's most dangerous pirate, a wanted criminal who destroys a dozen police space cruisers every day before breakfast. But all she really wants is to be called "Mom."
Aoi, her earthbound son, has no idea about his mother's infamous career, or even what she really looks like. She's always worn her mom-suit around him, but that gets destroyed when the Galactic Patrol follows her to Earth. Aoi's in for an adventure that will bring him to all corners of the universe, with the first working mom to carry a pulse rifle!
Volume 2
Courting Disaster
As a member of the Galactic Patrol, it is Mutsuki's duty to capture Space Pirate Mito at any cost. With no more time to plan, she is forced into a new offensive. The clueless Aoi has become smitten with the young officer and their first date went like clockwork.
But bringing her home to mother isn't so easy. Mutsuki prepares to use the hapless boy as a hostage and capture the wanted felon. Will she complete her duty to the Galactic Patrol, or will her own feelings come first?
Volume 3
Ranban Dearest
Aoi has been captured by Commander Ranban of the Galactic Patrol. Mito is forced to turn herself over to Ranban in the hopes of keeping her son safe. Sabu and Shin aren't about to sit around idly, so they call in the entire Royal Army.
Meanwhile, Mito and Ranban duel in front of Aoi, and Ranban's helmet is knocked free. Under the helmet is the face of the mother Aoi remembers! Who is really Aoi's mother?
Volume 4
Like Mother, Like Son
The great battle between Mito and Ranban began long ago, when they were both heirs to the galactic royal family. Young members of the royal family have a certain genetic instability, and with Ranban and Mito fighting overhead, Aoi finds that this royal instability is about to affect him personally.
Season 2
Aoi and Mutsuki: A Pair of Queens
Aoi was raised as a normal boy on Earth. Little did he know he was the heir apparent to Mito, the Queen-turned-Space-Pirate of an alien race that chooses their sex at puberty! Aoi fell in love with Mutsuki, the police officer who was chasing Mito, and the three of them saved the Universe. The only side effect was that Aoi blossomed into a beautiful young woman.
Now a malevolent entity calling herself the true Queen of the Universe appears with enough power to destroy entire planets. Aoi must defend her new throne, but she needs Mutsuki's help. Mutsuki must come to terms with her own feelings for Aoi so they can defend Earth together and become the galaxy's first royal pair of queens.
