Yuyushiki...

Recently, I picked up Yuyushiki...
Everyone knows you can learn a lot on the internet, and some of it is even true. But if you want to know what's REALLY going on and important, then there's just one place to go: the computer club!

Okay, so maybe it's not the club itself, but the three girls you're most likely to find there. And maybe they do spend more time chatting about their social lives and debating things like the virtues of ketchup versus mayonnaise than they do learning about the ins and outs of a keyboard, but whatever they're up to, it's sure to put a smile on your face.

So come learn what the mysterious YuiYukari Formula is all about and join serious Yui, hyperactive Yuzuko and lovable but not quite in touch with reality Yukari as they experience life's ups, downs, surprises, and occasionally, the internet!

Yuyushiki is a Japanese 4-panel manga series written and illustrated by Komata Mikami, which began serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara magazine from April 2008. A television anime adaptation by Kinema Citrus aired in Japan between April and June 2013. The story follows a group of three girls who join their high school's Data Processing Club. As the story unfolds it becomes readily apparent that the trio's methods of "processing data" are quite loose indeed, often to humorous effect.
Yuyushiki is one of those series, that immediately demanded my attention, even though the subject matter is rather ordinary. Nothing extraordinary happens at all during the course of the series. Yuyushiki is basically three girls talking about random subjects, making word puns and teasing one another. Although there is some innuendo in their dialog and a brief discussion regarding breasts, there are no naughty bits to speak of and obviously no bloodshed or gore.

Yuzuko, normally has an innocent nature, but will sometimes break out into bouts of outrageous behavior. Despite her dimwitted behavior and crazy ideas, she is actually quite smart when it comes to studies. Yui is a generally shy girl who often serves as the straight man to the antics of Yuzuko and Yukari, who often like to tease her. Yukari is a generally light headed girl who will often copy Yuzuko's antics if she finds them amusing. She comes from a rich family and was friends with Yui in elementary school.
Some of the word puns in Yuyushiki left me a bit mystified and there were a handful of occasions where I had to use the rewind feature. But, even though some of the dialog flew over my head, I still enjoyed the nice bubbly tone of Yuyushiki a lot. The animation is noticeably limited in some areas -- background characters are often depicted in black and white. But, given the subject matter, expectations aren't very high. Overall, even with the limited animation and the rather bland subject matter, I would give Yuyushiki a 4 out of 5.
