In Search Of The Lost Future...

In Search Of The Lost Future centers around a web of love, loss, friendship and fate between and among the members of the Astronomy Club and an effort to change one member's fate...
A series of increasingly strange events have been reported at Uchihama Academy’s soon-to-be-replaced aging school building. When the student council grows concerned about the spectral encounters, puzzling sleep disorders, and bizarre mishaps, they enlist the aid of the Astronomy Club to crack the case before it’s too late.

One evening after school, club member Sou Akiyama is rocked by a sudden earthquake and an encounter with a beautiful and mysterious naked girl who appears to know him even though he has no recollection of ever meeting her. The next day, the very same girl arrives at his school as a transfer student who’s interested in joining the Astronomy Club. In the blink of an eye, Sou’s fate along with the fates of all the girls in his club begin to change in very dramatic and mysterious ways.

Anime studio feel (Kanamemo, Kiss x Sis) produced an adaptation of Trumple’s adult PC game [Ushinawareta Mirai o Motomete (Searching for the Lost Future)]. The original game revolves around a large school’s astronomy club, which is charged with investigating rumors of unsettling supernatural anomalies around the school.
According to Wikipedia...
In Search of the Lost Future is the sole title developed by the visual novel studio Trumple. Originally, the design team were developing the game under the visual novel developer Abhar, but following Abhar's dissolution, the team working on the game formed the studio Trumple... After the game's release, Trumple announced the suspension of their activity on July 27, 2012...

There is a French sentence, "Nous dépassons beaucoup d'aujourd'hui, et changerons le destin quelque jour" (literally translated as "We pass many today, and change the destiny someday", and interpreted as "We pass by much today, and someday will change our fate"), at the bottom of the anime's title logo.
At the heart of this tangled web is a love between two life-long friends that seems destined by fate and is cut short by a horrific accident that ends the life of one of the members of the Astronomy Club and has ripple effects on the remaining members. Yui, a mysterious figure with ties to the Astronomy Club members and an equally mysterious cube of unknown origin appears to play a key role in an attempt to change fate and may also be connected to other strange occurrences surrounding the Astronomy Club and even extending into other people around the town.

As events progress, Yui's role as an agent of change becomes clear. As Yui works toward her goal, ripple effects stemming from Yui's interference with fate seem to only make things worse. The story makes use of flash forwards and flash backs to reveal its secrets over a period of time, so that, it’s not until the latter episodes that the viewer has enough information to realize that the story is unbelievably implausible and convoluted. In the latter episodes, some effort is expended in inventing super-science to explain some of the implausible elements in the series. There are some gaps in the story. For instance, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, the origin of the mysterious cube is not really explained during the course of the series.

Surprisingly, there is some red ink, but, In Search Of The Lost Future is by no means gory. There are also no naughty bits to speak of in the series. The story is somewhat complicated and there are some noticeable gaps. There isn't really any eye candy to speak of. Overall, In Search Of The Lost Future is very intriguing and engaging -- I watched the entire series in one sitting --, but, the ending felt a bit underwhelming. My first thought about the ending was to question the purpose of the entire story. I gave In Search Of The Lost Future a 2 out of 5. I might have given In Search Of The Lost Future less than that, but, it wasn't a complete waste of time. Also, please be aware that you'll need to read your anime as the series is subtitled only.
