Mystic Archives of Dantalian...
In Mystic Archives of Dantalian we follow the exploits of Hugh (or as he prefers to be known Huey) and Dalian as they search for and try to recover "phantom books" -- books of great power that could cause problems in the wrong hands...
Mystic Archives of Dantalian is a combination of energetic and lively action with an almost bubbly, and at times sarcastic, sense of humor. I quite like the rapport between Dalian and Huey. Camilla and Armand's antics spice up what could otherwise be quite a dark and foreboding series. There is some action including some gun play and some hand to hand combat and quite a lot of magical combat.
The mystical elements can be a bit longer than necessary. It seems that whenever Huey needs a power boost, he turns to Dalian and has to "unlock" her in order to retrieve a book chosen for the specific situation, so, he can then read a spell for the aforementioned power boost. It's somewhat like an extended transformation sequence that leads into the spell. And, for some reason that defies description, the bad guys or gals, as the case may be, never bother to interrupt the spell-reading process.
Overall, I needed to suspend disbelief quite a bit, but, I had a lot of fun watching Mystic Archives of Dantalian. I saw the entire series in one sitting. Sure, many of the episodes follow the classic monster-of-the-week formula, but, there was humor, action and good old-fashioned murder -- and most of it beautifully animated. Sadly, there are no naughty bits or even fan service. I gave Mystic Archives of Dantalian a 4 out of 5. Please note that you will need to read your anime as this series is subtitled only. By the way, a nice touch at the end of each episode is a live-action end credit sequence that exudes a creepy vintage horror movie vibe.
From the talented minds of studio Gainax comes an adventurous collection of mysteries where real works of literature are woven into a supernatural world.Mystic Archives of Dantalian has a definite monster-of-the-week feeling mixed with occult detective and the occasional zombie apocalypse. There is actually quite a lot of violence and bloodshed, but, not much in the way of gore.
After his grandfather's untimely death, Hugh Anthony Disward visits the estate of his inheritance where he discovers a library that's out of this world. Embodying the archive is Dalian, a clever girl with a sharp tongue as biting as her sweet tooth. Circumstance leads to necessity, and she teaches Huey how to harness the power within-a handy trick to learn, seeing as it's the only way to subdue the monsters brought forth by magical works of literature. These cursed tomes, known as Phantom Books, seem to always fall into the wrong hands. And while Huey and Dalian try to keep up with the paper trails, a friend from Huey's childhood sits patiently in the depths of the Mystic Archives of Dantalian.
