Celestial Method...

Celestial Method appeared sweet and had a hint of something other-worldly...
It's been seven years since Nonoka Komiya last lived in Lake Kiriya City. However, while she knew that there would be changes in the town, she's still unprepared for what she finds upon her return: A giant saucer hovers over the entire city, as it has since shortly after she and her family left.

Stranger yet, a girl she doesn't know, Noel, is waiting for her, claiming that they have met before. Confused, Nonaka tries to focus on reconnecting with her old friends, but odd memories, suppressed in the wake of her mother's death, begin to float to the top of her consciousness.

Can it be that she has met Noel before? And how does this connect with the appearance of the saucer itself? To solve the riddle, Nonoka must join with her friends and rediscover the events that occurred before she left Lake Kiriya. Because there's more than a mystery that must be solved: there's a promise that has to be kept in Celestial Method.
In Celestial Method, we follow Nonoka and her closest friends as they discover lost memories and explore their friendships with one another. This is a dramatic and, at times, heart-wrenching character study of Nonoka and how her friends relate to her and each other.

And, above it all is a mysterious disk shaped object that has been hanging in the sky for the last seven years. The disk itself is never portrayed as a threat, but, more of a tourist attraction. Because the disk has been sitting in the sky, apparently doing nothing for seven years, no one seems particularly threatened by the disk. There are some restrictions in place, such as no fireworks in the vicinity of the disk.

Nonoka had moved away from her childhood home years earlier with her family during her mother's terminal illness. The early episodes seem to dwell on Nonoka's memory loss following her return to her childhood home. After her mother died, Nonoka suppressed her childhood memories as a defense mechanism.

At the heart of Celestial Method, is Noel, a young girl who seems to have some connection to the group of friends and to the disk. Noel makes her triumphant appearance in Nonoka's room after apparently having waited for Nonoka to return for the last seven years. Early on, we discover that there is a connection between Noel and the disk as Noel admits that there is a connection.

Celestial Method is a slice-of-life drama that happens to have a disk shaped object hanging in the sky. A lot of what happens in the series focuses on the group of friends exploring their feelings and remembering past events. The first story arc in the series concerns Nonoka's attempt to bring back the fireworks festival which used to be an annual tradition before the disk arrived. Although, early on, Noel does admit to a connection between herself and the disk, it isn't until the culmination of the first story arc that the nature of that connection is revealed.

Another story arc in Celestial Method involves a promise between and among the group of friends. The series builds to a wonderful climax when one of the group decides to move away suddenly and there is some uncertainty regarding whether or not the remaining friends will actually be able keep that promise. Then, just when the series appears to have come to some dramatic conclusion, there are two episodes left. In the final two episodes, there is a sudden and dramatic twist in the story.

Overall, Celestial Method is sweet and, at times, a bit melodramatic. There are, of course, no naughty bits, bloodshed or gore to speak of. The series has a nice bright appearance that I've come to expect in newer releases. Nothing spectacular really happens in the series. There is some CG, but, given the subject matter, eye candy is not expected. The series is essentially a character study with just a hint of the other-worldly. Celestial Method is certainly not for everyone, but, I enjoyed the series. I gave Celestial Method a 3 out of 5.
