Strike The Blood...

I've always had a soft spot for vampires. I've rarely met a vampire I didn't like. So, of course, when Strike The Blood said "buy me", I had to...
Kojou Akatsuki is a normal high school student. Living in Itogami City, he tries his best not to stick out. Considering creatures of legend populate the city, you'd think he'd have no problem! Humanity's rise from the dark ages has brought mythological entities like vampires, spirits, and other things to near extinction in the modern day. In exchange for being able to continue to exist, they've all agreed to live on the man-made island, otherwise known as the Demon District. Unfortunately, despite Kojou's attempts to keep his head down, someone has taken notice of him.

A mysterious girl follows him, and when they finally meet face to face, she exposes him for what he is: the Fourth Progenitor, a vampire powerful enough to shatter the fragile peace that has settled over Itogami City, and plunge everything into chaos! But if Kojou Akatsuki really is the Fourth Progenitor, why doesn't he act like the horrible menace he's supposed to be? How did a supposedly normal high school student become the Fourth? The answers might lie with the incident three months ago, an incident Kojou claims he can't remember!
Early on, I was anticipating that this series would be something that I might like. Strike The Blood centers around Kojou, an ordinary high school student who just happens to be a new vampire and an up-and-coming power in a world filled with magical beings, demons and the occasional human -- the Fourth Progenitor. The story line plods along at a fairly slow pace, but, there is some action in almost every episode. There is a lot of magic wielding, sword slashing and some hand-to-hand combat. While there is some bloodshed, the series is not particularly gory.

Strike The Blood is a mix of harem and monster-of-the-week genres where some of the monsters-of-the-week become part of Kojou's harem and also act as keys to unlock some of Kojou's powers. Kojou's youth and inexperience tend to cause more problems when Kojou inevitably comes across a threat. There is some fan service including skimpy attire, inappropriate fondling, some bare breasts and some bare bottoms, but, there are no naughty bits. Throughout the series, Kojou usually finds himself falsely accused of debauchery or some lecherous behavior when, if fact, the ladies are more likely than not, responsible for the bad behavior.

The 24 episodes that comprise Strike The Blood are divided into a number of multi-part story arcs which follow a pattern where some new monster-of-the-week is introduced and Kojou and the members of his harem work together to overcome the current monster. Sometimes, Kojou's desire to save someone from being a monster will inspire that monster to become a new member of his harem. In this way Kojou manages to build a very large harem. The story is somewhat disjointed in that although there are elements that carry through the series, in the end, the series is just one crisis after another.

Strike The Blood is classic monster-of-the-week genre where our hero and his harem of heroines work together to fight one monster after another. While there is some red ink, the series is not particularly gory. There is a lot of magical combat, but, after a while the repetitive nature of the series became somewhat monotonous. There is some fan service, but, compared with other fan service heavy series, this series is fairly tame. Overall, I really wanted to be more impressed with this series than I actually was. I gave Strike The Blood a 2 out of 5. Also, it should be noted that you will need to read your anime as the series is subtitled only.
