Your Name...
Over the past weekend, I stopped by my local Walmart and much to my surprise, guess what came home with me... Your Name...
After a while, Mitsuha and Taki have gathered enough information about each other in the form of hand-written notes and stories from their friends to realize that they are switching bodies. Afterwards, they devise a means of keeping track of each others' activities and setting some ground rules, using their cell phones to send notes to each other. The story continues in this back and forth manner until the characters have gathered enough information to suspect that the comet, which hangs over the story like the sword of Damocles, might be a common thread that binds them together.
The story builds to a wonderful climax as Taki and Mitsuha discover that Mitsuha's town, Itomori, is in immanent peril. They devise a plan to intervene and attempt to save the town. Throughout the feature, although, the two characters cannot remember their feelings for each other, they are somehow always drawn to one another over and over again. The feature managed to keep me guessing, will they ever meet in person ? Will they save the town ?
Your Name is a beautifully animated feature with a compelling and engaging story that is, at times, humorous, and at other times, gut wrenching. Although, Taki seems to have had more than his fair share of free feels while inhabiting Mitsuha's body, there are no actual naughty bits. Overall, Your Name was really very good. I enjoy watching and re-watching the feature. I would give Your Name a 5 out of 5.
From director Makoto Shinkai, the innovative mind behind Voices of a Distant Star and 5 Centimeters Per Second, comes a beautiful masterpiece about time, the thread of fate, and the hearts of two young souls.Your Name is presented in a series of flash-forwards and flash-backs as we experience each of the characters' worlds through each others' eyes. Mitsuha comes from a sleepy rural part of Japan, far removed from the big city and Taki lives in the vast metropolitan sprawl that is the city of Tokyo. The story opens with Taki waking up in Mitsuha's body and immediately realizing that something is very wrong. The story then pivots to the next day with Mitsuha back in her own body and hearing about the strange goings on from the previous day. The story then switches perspective, telling the story with Mitsuha in Taki's body and the following day with Taki back in his own body and hearing about the strange events from the day before. After each switch, the two main characters don't remember what they did in each others' bodies after they return to normal.
The day the stars fell, two lives changed forever. High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch paces. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki's body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other. Yet, somehow, it works. They build a connection and communicate by leaving notes, messages, and more importantly, an imprint.
When a dazzling comet lights up the night's sky, something shifts, and they seek each other out wanting something more-a chance to finally meet. But try as they might, something more daunting than distance prevents them. Is the string of fate between Mitsuha and Taki strong enough to bring them together, or will forces outside their control leave them forever separated?
