Mandalorian...

Last week, Mom and I began watching the Mandalorian, a live-action series set in the Star Wars universe. According to Disney...
After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.
Set in a period between the last of the original movies with Return Of The Jedi and the first of the new movies with The Force Awakens, the Mandalorian is the first non-animated incarnation of the Star Wars franchise to appear in a regular episodic form. Previously there were a handful of forgettable TV specials and a few direct-to-video live-action movies featuring the Ewoks. I've seen various animated series like Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Resistance and they're not half bad, but, the Mandalorian takes things to a whole new level.

The Mandalorian follows an unnamed member of a race of warriors that tend to keep their faces hidden behind armor and are known for their fighting prowess. The Mandalorian at the heart of this story goes about his work as a bounty hunter. Since I had seen Star Wars Rebels, in which the Mandalorian race plays a large part, I was familiar enough with their backstory to bring Mom up to speed on some of their history with the Empire. But, to be honest, you don't really need to know much about the Mandalorian backstory to enjoy the series. The series features a mix of classic western themes and a bit of Lone Wolf And Cub.

The Mandalorian touches upon all of the tried and true Star Wars tropes and presents a gritty and richly immersive environment in which one can lose oneself for a bit. I'm not going to spoil anything here, but, if you're not hooked by the end of the first episode, I really cannot help you. A simple internet search for the series will turn up all manner of spoilers, so, be forewarned. Recently, Mom came home all excited about a new series that she'd heard about and so, the two of us sat down to watch the first couple of episodes. Needless to say, we're both hooked. While there is some violence and people do die, the series is surprisingly bloodless.

Obviously, the Mandalorian should get a higher score, but, because the series is not, as yet, available on archival media, for the time being, the Mandalorian will have to settle for a 4 out of 5. And, with Disney, who knows when or even IF this series will be released on archival media.
