Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045...

Last month, I had the opportunity to watch the first half of Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045. The producers are calling it season one, but, it's actually half of a story arc that is expected to span twenty-four episodes. According to Wikipedia...
In the year 2045, after an economic disaster known as the Simultaneous Global Default which destroyed the value of all forms of paper and electronic currency, the Big 4 nations of the world are engaged in a state of never-ending Sustainable War to keep the economy going. In this world, Motoko, Batou, and other members of Public Security Section 9 have contracted themselves out as mercenaries under the group GHOST, using their cybernetic enhancements and battle experience to earn a living while defusing hot-spots across the globe. However, the emergence of "Post Humans" and a conspiracy uncovered by former Chief Aramaki force Section 9 to reunite.
First off, while I am thrilled to see a new series featuring my favorite full-body cyborg and the supporting cast that I've come to appreciate, I can't say in all honesty, that I approve of the look of this particular incarnation of the Ghost In The Shell franchise. The characters look rather plastic and the character animation is a bit stiff and unrealistic. Putting aside my concerns about the look of the series, I still enjoyed seeing the characters once again.

This incarnation of the Ghost In The Shell franchise is set years after the events of the last series and in the time frame of the series, there has been a global financial crisis which lead to global unrest. In the early episodes, there is a great deal of exposition surrounding the financial crisis, social unrest and the global response which involves sustained military conflict or sustainable war as means of keeping the economy running. Some of the early episodes are fairly forgettable with apparently little to contribute to the story as a whole.

But, it's not until the introduction of post-humans, that the series starts to really exhibit something interesting. Just as the Laughing Man incident was the hook that drew the audience into the first Stand-Alone Complex series, the post-humans are this new series' hook to draw in the audience. Unfortunately, the pacing of the series is a bit slow for my tastes and the revelations surrounding post-humans come so late in the series, that I almost lost interest in the series even before the introduction of post-humans.

The story-telling was pretty good in the original Stand-Alone Complex series and its sequel 2nd Gig, but, this new incarnation, aside from its generally slow pacing, doesn't have the same feel as the two earlier series. Overall, I was somewhat disappointed with the first half of Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045, but, despite my misgivings about this new series, I still intend to finish off the series when the other half of the series becomes available. As it stands, I would give Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045 a 2 out of 5.
