Princess Resurrection...

Recently, I picked up Princess Resurrection...
Volume 1
No good deed goes unpunished, so when Hiro Hiyormi tries to save a beautiful young woman from certain death he ends up a bit dead himself! Now normally a corpse is a corpse, of course, of course; but when the girl you've saved is the daughter of the King of the Monsters, there's no such thing as resting in peace! Pulled back from the grave to join Hime's monstrous retinue of servants and sycophants, Hiro must NOW follow in the wake of carnage and destruction that trails his chainsaw wielding mistress as she battles the various rogue werewolves, vampires and zombies that make her life (and his post-death) a living hell! Still, while this isn't quite the afterlife Hiro was hoping for, it DOES beat that OTHER alternative, should Hime decide to stop funneling life back into his body! She's the ghoul your mother warned you about and she wants your body in PRINCESS RESURRECTION!

Volume 2
If you thought the first half-season of Princess Resurrection was on the crazed cutting edge, (what with the chainsaws, man-eating plants, pandas, gynoids and more chainsaws) the second half is going to knock you dead silly! With ghost-knights, shape-shifters, were-sharks and tanuki turned vampire hunters running amuck, Hime's regicide-focused siblings have literally opened the flood-gates of Hell, and everything from arcane ne spells to zombies is now fair play in their game me of death... even the deadly Dumplings of Doom! It's at times like this that being a re-animated corpse in the employ of the daughter of the King of Monsters really sucks, but the reluctant Hiro has no choice. Death is a harsh mistress and lie has to do her bidding in the second half-season set-of PRINCESS RESURRECTION!
Princess Resurrection is, surprisingly, fairly bloodless, given the genre, and also somewhat humorous. The story concerns Hime, a princess of the Monster Realm who is competing with other members of the royal family for the Monster Realm's throne. As the series progresses, Hime, gathers members for her team and they battle various monsters who either have a grudge against Hime, or are working with other members of the royal family to remove Hime from the competition.

Hime surrounds herself with a cast of characters including a vampire, a werewolf, a boy she raised from the dead, an android and a human servant to round out her immediate staff. Hiro, the aforementioned boy raised from the dead, takes a lot of abuse from Hime, but, he keeps coming back for more as his sense of duty to Hime compels him to protect her even at the cost of his own life. Hiro like the proverbial Kenny from South Park, usually dies at least once in most episodes.

Princess Resurrection does have a distinct monster-of-the-week feeling in many of the earlier episodes. Some of the classic Hollywood monsters are well represented in the series such as the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Triffids and, of course, vampires and werewolves. Despite, the potential for being very dark and brooding, the series manages to maintain a fairly light tone.

I have a soft spot for vampires. I've rarely met a vampire that I didn't like. And, Princess Resurrection has two vampires. Reiri and Zeppeli, the resident blood-suckers, are a treat to watch. Although Reiri is supposed to be working for Hime, sometimes one just wonders where Reiri's loyalties really lie. Zeppeli discovers that it's not a good idea to cross Reiri and comments that women are fearful beings. The stray comments directed by Reiri at Liza, the werewolf, are, at times, very funny. Reiri often refers to Liza as a dog and comments that Hime should keep her dog on a leash.

Overall, Princess Resurrection was entertaining, but, surprisingly bloodless. There are, of course, no naughty bits to speak of. After a while, the series does suffer from a repetitive monster-of-the-week syndrome, but, there is enough humor in the series to keep the tone fairly light. The series turns a little dark in the last few episodes, but, that is to be expected as events become very personal. I would give Princess Resurrection a 3 out of 5. Lastly, please be aware that you will need to read your anime as the series is subtitled only.
