Princess Princess...

I picked up Princess Princess recently...
Tooru Kouno left a sad family life to live at a prestigious all-boys boarding school. From his very first day, he feels like he's fallen into another world. The boys in his class seem to be strangely interested in his pretty-boy looks. He's shown around by Class President Sakamoto, who is mysteriously bowed to by everyone, even the upperclassmen. Tooru even catches a glimpse of an enchanting redheaded Princess. A graceful blonde named Shihoudani finally reveals the school's secret. To inspire the student body, campus pretty boys are required to dress up as girls... and Tooru is on the list!
I must admit that the premise is a bit strange, but, to my absolute surprise, the series is actually very entertaining. So much so, that I watched the entire series in one sitting. Princess Princess is essentially a situation comedy --  there are no giant robots, no spandex-clad superheroes and no blood or gore to speak of. There are young adults, presumably over the age of 18, who have some emotional baggage to lug around. Obviously, a big part of the series' comedy centers around cross-dressing and gender confusion, but, the series, easily manages not to be crude or overly off-putting. There are some suggestive situations, but, there are no naughty bits.

The series is very funny, engaging and fast-paced, but, not so fast-paced that I couldn't keep up with the subtitles. The music in the opening and ending segments is actually quite good in its own right. The animation quality is reasonable, given the content of the series -- you're certainly not going to be blown away by awesome special effects. The series does switch between traditional character animation and super-deformed animation when the characters are being less than serious. The series also pokes fun at the "pretty boy" and "idol" anime conventions. I give Princess Princess a 3 out of 5.
