In the early days of U.S. anime industry that we all know and love, Urotsukidoji was the first of the erotic horror anime genre to be afforded a wide mainstream release in the U.S. and as it happened, at the time, some mainstream retailers, not realizing that not all cartoons are for kids, mistakenly thought that this was something that could be sold to children... Oops...

Chapter 1
Legend of the Overfiend
According to legend, the world consists of three dimensions - the Human World, the World of Man-Beasts and the World of Monster Demons. Every 3,000 years, the Overfiend is brought to life through the body of a human to destroy the existing world and unite these three dimensions into a new world of peace and happiness. However, the new world that the Overfiend is supposed to create may be a sickening place of horrendous violence, uncontrollable lusts and supernatural forces beyond comprehension. Is there any hope for humanity? Will The Legend Of The Overfiend become reality?

Chapter 2
Legend of the Demon Womb
Nazi Germany - 1944: As American bomberers soar towards Berlin, a revolting Satanic rite takes place below - Hitler and his minions are using the monstrous Nazi Death Rape Machine to render the dimensional boundaries separating the Human World from the World of Man-Beasts and the World of Monster Demons. Dr. Munhihausen Sr.'s life work is about to come to fruition - the conjuring of the Overfiend! Cut to modern day Tokyo - Munhihausen Jr. searches for a monster with strength enough to conquer the omnipotent Overfiend. Since legend says that he who kills the Overfiend will rule all three worlds forever, Munhihausen is determined to slay the Overfiend and assume complete control over all three dimensions. His efforts seem fruitless - until Nagumo's cousin Takeaki, infused with Nagumo's blood after an accident, begins to develop monstrous powers. As Man-Beast Amano Jyaku and his sister Megumi, together with faithful accomplice Kuroko attempt to thwart Munhihausen's evil plan, nothing seems likely to prevent Munhihausen, descendant of a race of brutal tyrants, from enslaving the world under his despicable rule! Chapter 3
Return of the Overfiend
Volume 1
Twenty years after the world was ravaged by the destructive monster Nagumo, rumored to be the Overfiend, a new order called Demon-Beasts has evolved to share this newly created realm. After only 20 years of sleep, Akemi is about to give birth to the true Overfiend in Osaka Castle. Forcing his own birth decades earlier than planned, the Overfiend warns Amano of the birth of an evil being and orders him to keep this being away from the castle. Under Caesar's rule, Tokyo has become a battleground between Buju and his Demon-Beasts and Caesar's Army. Praying for the Overfiend's demise, the tyrannical Caesar and his cohort Faust anxiously await the day when the world will be theirs. With the fate of the world at stake, the search for the mysterious being intensifies and even the most innocent children are suspect...

Volume 2
After only twenty years of sleep, the true Overfiend has been born and now lives on Osaka Castle. The evil forces wait for the right moment to make their move...and the most deadly are the tyrant Caesar and hs agent Faust. Now a child has emerged from and ancient statue - a child who may be the true Lord of Chaos. Caesar and Faust plot to unite the child, Himi, with their own demonic creation - the dark sludge of pure hate known as Fabrille. This new force will be the one power, which could defeat the Overfiend, exacting Caesar's revenge for the untimely death of his daughter, Alecto. Now his only solace lies in her android replacement. A shocked Amano recognizes Faust to be the despicable Munhihausen responsible for the emergence of the monstrous Nagumo. When the Overfiend contacts Himi to determine her true purpose, Munhihausen's plot may be inadvertently assisted as her sharp reaction only draws Fabrille closer. Will Munhihausen and Caesar succeed?

Volume 3
The battle to end all battles continues... The evil Caesar has taken advantage of the chaos to launch his ultra-titanic nuclear missiles, aiming them directly at Osaka... Meanwhile, the Overfiend summons Megumi to Osaka, where he attempts to tap her hidden powers...will they be enough to stop the missiles or will they be forced to flee for their lives? Finally, Caesar discovers that Alecto is pregnant and that this new life may hold the key to humanity's destiny. When Alecto is taken hostage by the Demon-Beasts, Caesar plots a terrible revenge...

Volume 4
The battle in Caesar's Palace rages on. In his new monstrous form, Caesar relentlessly pursues his daughter's captors, narrowly escaping his own demise. As Caesar's troops begin to lose ground, it's time to unleash the ultimate weapon: Dieneich the Genocidroid, a powerful android still under assembly. A golden snow begins to fall and drifts into Dieneich's chamber reviving him. Outside, the only sound is Himi's crying and Buju's attempts to comfort her. When her crying subsides, she tells Buju that it's time to go to Osaka and meet the Overfiend. She is accompanied by three Demon-Beasts - all searching for the answer to their own existence... As Buju, Himi and the three Demon-Beasts begin their journey, they are joined by yet another ally - the genocidroid Dieneich. With a renewed sense of purpose, they hope to discover what lies in store for humanity...

Chapter 4
Inferno Road
Episode 1
The final, apocalyptic chapter in the Overfiend saga! It is the early 21st century, and the civilization of mankind is gone. But the Earth is still livable - if you aren't human. Powerful, supernatural forces have sculpted our world into something more... suitable. Now, flesh-hungry demons and half-demons rule the Earth - raping and slaughtering thousands of human beings. This is the Age of the Overfiend. But hope is not lost. If Himi can be brought to Osaka, then the world can be made whole once more. In their quest to bring Himi to Osaka, Buju and company commandeer a tank for the perilous journey across the broken and desolate wasteland. While passing through the ruins of an earlier civilization, their progress is blocked by an immense crater - as though a great hand reached down from the heavens and ripped away the land. Here, they encounter Ken and Yumi, refugees from a metropolis of unimaginable evil - where innocence masks awesome psionic powers, and where some serve as slaves and some worse...

Episode 2
In a city ruled by powerful psionic beings, the only law is total obedience. Escape is punishable by death, sexual torture, or worse. Ellis, one of the ruling brothers, summons a demon to rape and tortue Yumi to set an example for the others - the masters must be obeyed. However, these beings have made a horrifying discovery - by drinking Himi's living blood, they will become immortal - retaining their terrible powers forever... Will the half-demon Amano Jyaku be able to rescue Ken, Yumi and Himi from their sadistic clutches? What secret courses through Himi's veins?

Epiosde 3
As they approach Osaka, one final obstacle stands in our heroes' path... The Mad Regent lives! Munhihausen has been searching for a power capable of destroying his ancient rival, the immortal half-demon Amano Jyaku - leaving the Overfiend's old enemy free to pursue his power-mad schemes of global domination. Munhihausen unleashes his newest and deadliest pawn: the demonic Yoenki - a monstrous creature powered by a burning thirst for revenge against Amano! Now begins the final battle for the fate of the Earth, as Yoenki and her minions stand against Amano, and his allies - from which the victor will rebuild the planet in their image.

Urotsukidoji was the first of the erotic horror anime genre to be released in the U.S. There was a great deal of controversy following its release in the U.S. and for a while it became very difficult to find retailers willing to carry this title. There was actually a recall of the initial release, so, that adult content warning stickers could be affixed to the products before the initial run of tapes could be sold. Because of the controversy and negative publicity, Urotsukidoji became one of the more infamous anime titles to emerge from the early days of the U.S. anime distribution industry. Urotsukidoji is infamous with good reason, as it is filled with demons, violence, bloodshed, gore, naughty bits galore, tentacles abusing nubile young girls and other good wholesome depravity.

I used to have a mix of dubbed and subtitled versions of the series on VHS. This was, of course, back in the days when you had to choose, in advance, whether or not you wanted to read your anime. I gave Urotsukidoji a 3 out of 5. Sadly, in the aftermath of the Ultimate Otaku Fall Cleanup, I decided not to keep it in my archive.

Given that Urotsukidoji is NOT suitable for the younger anime fans among us, I was amazed to find a reasonably family friendly and particularly useful video that describes the first chapter, with mild spoilers from beginning to end. Please note: I set the start time for the video to skip over the live-action bit in the beginning as it was a bit too silly for my tastes...
