Knights Of Sidonia...

Recently, I picked up Knights Of Sidonia...
A thousand years after the alien Gauna destroyed the Earth, a small remnant of humanity still fights on to survive, fleeing on the gargantuan asteroid-based spaceship Sidonia. But centuries of flight and warfare have changed mankind in incredible ways: genetic engineering has allowed humans to photosynthesize like plants, reproduction occurs through cloning, and a third gender has been created to balance the population.

Even though it's been a century since the last encounter with the Gauna, military service is mandatory, with all those able enough enlisted to pilot the Garde robots that stand as Sidonia's front line of defense. For Nagate Tanikaze, whose grandfather secretly hid him in the forgotten bowels of the asteroid, it's a strange new world as he's forced to come to the surface and join the ranks of defenders.

Yet his recruitment comes just in time, for the Gauna have suddenly reappeared, and what could be man's last battle will require every resource humanity has left. And what no one knows, yet, is that Nagate is not exactly what he seems, and a secret buried in his past may change the fate of all mankind!
I had seen previews for Knights Of Sidonia and was really looking forward to its release. It definitely looked like something I might like...

According to Wikipedia...
The anime series was received with high praise by famous members of the Japanese anime/game industry, like Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, who claims that "It's a kind of anime that we haven't seen for a while that has that sci-fi spirit. Using digital technology cultivated through games, it creates animation that encapsulates Japan's cultural assets like manga, cel animation, kanji, giant robots, etc. What's born is a unique made-in-Japan work that could never be cooked up in Hollywood. Japanese culture has lost its "cool," and Knights of Sidonia will be the white knight that saves it."
I've seen the first few episodes of Knights Of Sidonia and so far I'm very pleased with the series. It has a unique, almost documentary style that I've seen in live action sci-fi series like the relaunch of Battlestar Galactica. In the early part of the series, there is a distinct tone of desperation where the last remnants of humanity are struggling to survive not only in the harsh environment of space, but, also against an alien menace. I'm reminded of the early episodes of Gargantia., but with less of the human soul searching found in Gargantia and a lot more of the alien bashing and bloodshed...

I haven't really seen enough of the series to make a definitive judgement, but, what I've seen so far, looks good...
