Gate Keepers...

Long ago, I picked up Gate Keepers...
Volume 1
Open The Gate
1969. Strange invaders threaten Japan's recovery from the devastation of World War II with a shocking form of guerilla warfare. Fortunately, a new type of hero has been discovered among the teenage population of Japan - the Gatekeepers! Able to channel "gates" to other dimensions, this new generation of heroes are the only thing standing between Earth and total annihilation!

Volume 2
New Fighters
Team Chaos! The AEGIS Agency scours Japan searching for more Gatekeepers to join the fight against the invaders. Soon, Bancho (Big Boss) and Kaoru Konoe are recruited to join Shun, Ruriko and Reiko in their training for battle. Unfortunately, they quickly discover that making these wildly different teenagers work together may be more challenging than fighting the invaders!

Volume 3
Infiltration
While struggling to locate Invaders suspected of causing airplane accidents around the world, the Gate Keepers discover Invaders disguised as an airplane! However, the manifestation of their teacher into an Invader forces the Gate Keeper agents to recognize the full extent of the Invaders? reach. But, the greatest shock is still to come - a Gate Keeper is working with the Invaders!!

Volume 4
The New Threat
Baron Akuma (Akuma Hakushaku) has forced the AEGIS team to crash on a tropical island where their dreams suspiciously come true! Then, the destructive Kaiser Kikai (Kikai Shogun) turns the bullet train into a missile headed straight for Tokyo, with Shun and his family on board! Finally, while searching for a missing AEGIS airplane, Shun and Ruriko are attacked by a new type of flying Invaders. However, when a mysterious girl with amazing gate abilities saves them, should they believe their luck?

Volume 5
To The Rescue
Internal Conflict! The Aegis HQ in New York sends experienced agents to take over the defense of Japan! Immediately, Shun and the other Far East Branch agents protest, but after a near disaster in the field, they are forced to recognize their inexperience. However, are these new orders playing right into the Invaders' schemes? When self-doubt and internal conflicts become more of a threat than the Invaders plans, it's time for action both in the battlefield and in love!

Volume 6
Discovery
Megumi's insults force Reiko to face her own incompetence, so Reiko attempts to improve by emulating each of the other Gate Keeper's training methods. Even though her efforts continuously fail, Reiko eventually discovers her own way to contribute to A.E.G.I.S. just in time to meet new challenges from the Invaders! Then, the Far East Branch of A.E.G.I.S. uncovers evidence that real people are being replaced by Invaders, but HQ refuses to devote more resources to help. With the discovery of a canine Invader, Spitzilla, will HQ be forced to regret their decision?!

Volume 7
The Shadow
Reiji Kageyama revealed his radical political theories on national TV, but an Invader attack forces AEGIS to jam the rest of the broadcast to prevent widespread panic. Christmas and New Year's pass relatively uneventfully, but the Shadow's plots weaken the AEGIS team. To further complicate the situation, the return of Kaiser Kikai (Kikai Shogun) and Count Akuma (Akukma Hakusyaku) coincides with a threat against Ruriko's father - will the Gate Keepers be able to deal with the threat? Will they realize the true enemy before it is too late?
Way back in the misty down of time, the release strategy for new anime involved splitting a series into several volumes with a handful of episodes per volume. I picked up the first volume of Gate Keepers and quickly lost interest in the series. I gave Gate Keepers a 1 out of 5.
