Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt called for me and said "Buy Me", so I did...
The animation quality of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is only slightly better than a typical flash-based cartoon, but, given the subject matter, expectations are not very high. Bathroom humor abounds as the series opens with a ghost that attacks people while they are relieving themselves -- hilarity ensues. Red ink in the form of extreme nose bleeds as the result of an epidemic of excessive and uncontrollable nose picking is about all of the red ink in the series. There are no actual naughty bits, but, there is a nipple-filled ghost that squirts frosting on cakes, that in turn, makes people excessively fat. And, there are any number of sex scenes that are hinted at with shadows or indicated off-screen with sound effects or on-screen under sheets. Of course, there are plenty of bare bottoms and even some phallic imagery. Needless to say, the younger anime fans among us should stay away.
I broke my usual rule about only reading my anime. I did switch back and forth between English and Japanese audio and I left the subtitles on throughout. The English language dialogue is very blue, but, the Japanese dialogue, while certainly quite blue, is not quite as extreme as the English dialogue. Amazingly, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is just as enjoyable in English as it is in Japanese. Sadly, the series does end rather abruptly, leaving the door wide open for more episodes... A nice touch at the end of each episode is the live-action shot of the monster-of-the-week being blown up.
Overall, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is frenetic and very fast paced with all sorts of tasteless humor, but, still very enjoyable to watch in either English or Japanese. In fact, the English dub, although the script does take some liberties with the original dialogue, is actually surprisingly good. This series is definitely NOT suitable for the younger anime fans among us. I would give Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt a 4 out of 5. By the way, I really like the song Fly Away, which appears briefly in the series and is used as the background music for one of the U.S. trailers.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is very silly, but, was surprisingly a lot of fun to watch. The series follows the exploits of two disgraced angels who hunt ghosts as a means of atoning for their sins and, the hope is, that if they redeem themselves enough, by collecting a sufficient number of heaven coins, they might be allowed to return to heaven. It's classic monster-of-the-week action mixed with manic energy, tasteless humor and heaping amounts of fan service. As it happens, Panty's panties, once removed, become weapons and as such, in the cover art shown above, since Panty has her weapon drawn (the blue and white thing with the pink bow on top), Panty isn't wearing any. Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, like Triage X, pushes the envelope with regard to violence and sexuality in mainstream anime and comes very, very close to being very, very naughty without actually being naughty.The Anarchy Sisters Panty and Stocking are two nasty angels who got booted from the pearly gates for being foul-mouthed bitches! Now they spend their days blowing up ghosts in the lecherous abyss between Heaven and Earth. Panty likes sex, Stocking likes sweets, their afro-sporting main man Garter Belt has a fetish we can't mention. Together, they're keeping the streets free of bodily fluids. Ghosts don't have a prayer against their panty pistols and stocking swords, and if this debaucherous duo can collect enough Heaven Coins, they just might get their halos back. They've got a slim chance in hell, but rolling commando is the best way to get lucky - especially with Panty and Stocking!
