I watched All You Need Is Kill...
All You Need Is Kill follows the trials and tribulations of Rita, our local every-girl who finds herself thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Rita is stuck in a repeating loop of time where she is the only one who remembers what happened in the previous loop and must fight alien hoards over and over again. I thought that this premise sounded vaguely familiar, and sure enough, Tom Cruise, starred in a live-action movie, Edge Of Tomorrow that follows a similar storyline. The source material, the light novel, All You Need Is Kill came out in 2004, and the movie, Edge Of Tomorrow, came out in 2014. Of course, the Hollywood movie takes some liberties with the source material to serve its own ends, so it should be treated as its own thing.
As for All You Need Is Kill, there are no naughty bits, but, there are copious amounts of red ink including body smashing, body chewing, body ripping and other assorted gruesome deaths. The slow pacing in the beginning of the feature is a bit aggravating, but, after Rita finds that she isn't actually alone and gets into a groove, the pace picks up. The imagery is a bit surreal, particularly in the latter part of the feature, but, I enjoyed All You Need Is Kill and gave it a 3 out of 5.
Set in the year 20XX, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL follows the story of Rita, a resourceful but isolated young woman volunteering to help rebuild Japan after the mysterious appearance of a massive alien flower known as Darol. When Darol unexpectedly erupts in a deadly event, unleashing monstrous creatures that decimate the population, Rita is caught in the destruction -- and killed. But then she wakes up again. And again. Caught in an endless time loop, Rita must navigate the trauma and repetition of death until she crosses paths with Keiji, a shy young man trapped in the same cycle. Together, they fight to break free from the loop and find meaning in the chaos around them.
